Only connect….
These are the words and theme in Howard’s End,
the E.M. Forster novel. They also have meaning to
me as a therapist and counselor, as connections
are what make life meaningful, and connections are
all about therapy—the bridge between therapist
and client, which is one of the most powerful
relationships. It is a relationship based on trust and
honesty. As a therapist I treat my clients non-
judgmentally with complete acceptance, and this
gives the client the safety she/he needs in which to
experiment and grow.
My role as a therapist is BEING a bridge,
connecting the client’s past to the present—finding
out what happened in the past that has created
behaviors and emotions still present today, and
getting in the way of contentedness. This
awareness can lead to healing, but it is not enough
by itself. I also am a strong believer in helping
clients identify the faulting thinking and negative
beliefs about themselves that keep them
emotionally distressed and locked in behaviors that
are not helpful to them. This must be followed by
the next step-- changing these negative thoughts
and beliefs and replacing them with positive ones
so that we feel less distressed and can take
positive action in the world, and live more
contentedly and meaningfully.
I have been fortunate to have had experience
working with all kinds of mental health issues. I
began practicing in Connecticut and now practice in
Portland, Oregon. My private practice is individual
and couple’s counseling. Treating depression has
been a large focus of my work. I also have worked
with anxiety, mood swings, obsessive-compulsive
disorders, panic attacks, grief, PTSD, addiction
issues. I understand gay, lesbian, trans-gendered,
bi-sexual and questioning issues. I understand, am
sensitive to and celebrate diversity of all kinds. I
have done extensive work in domestic violence. I
am especially interested in relationships—how they
work and how to make them better. Thus,
communication skills and personal effectiveness
skills are interests of mine.
